Does TMS work for migraines?

NeurOasis is now providing prophylactic treatment for migraine headaches. Specifically, patients with previously diagnosed migraine headache, historic normal MRI or CT of the head, are having more than 2 headaches per month, and have had poor response to prophylactic and/or rescue medication.

What causes migraines?

Dopamine and serotonin are among chemicals involved in a migraine. They are normally found in the brain and can cause blood vessels to act abnormally if they are present in abnormal amounts or if the blood vessels are unusually sensitive to them.

Symptoms of Migraines

According to Migraine Statistics, almost 5 million in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack per month, while more than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability. Migraines occur most often in women.

Migraines may be accompanied by a series of symptoms and warning signs. These include:

  • Flashes of light
  • Blind spots
  • Tingling in the arms or legs
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Increased sensitivity to light and sound

How TMS helps Migraines

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation administers short pulses of a magnetic field, stimulating the inactive or disrupted area of the brain or suppressing the overactive area of the brain, reducing symptoms of migraines.

TMS Therapy is administered for a period of weeks. The in-office treatment typically takes less than an hour depending upon the condition. Patients remain awake and alert during the treatment and are able to return to their daily activities following treatment.
